Why did I write you a ticket?

I’m glad you asked!

First, keep in mind that Police Officers come in all shapes, sizes, and varieties. Some are truly knights in shining armor, some are heartless, unhappy, mean individuals. Despite all the screening processes in place, I’m sad to say that a few bad apples slip through.

Here are the common responses I receive when I write a ticket and my response to each:

  • You wrote me a ticket because I’m a / an (insert race here)
    • No, I don’t see colors. I see behavior that if uncorrected could result in injury to yourself or someone else, could result in a financial impact to someone else, or will disturb someone else’s right to a peaceful existence. You may have been born a certain race, but you chose to act a certain way and that’s why you’re getting a ticket.
  • I bet you don’t give young girls a ticket!
    • Wrong. I’ve given young, beautiful, hardbodied young ladies multiple tickets. I’ve also let fat, smelly, hairy guys off without a ticket. It doesn’t matter what you look like, I’m writing you a ticket because of your behavior.
  • Aren’t there real criminals out there?
    • Yep, there sure are. Believe it or not, we find a lot of them via traffic stops. As a matter of fact, most of them begin their career as a criminal committing traffic offenses. By breaking a traffic law, you’ve displayed either ignorance of the law or a blatant disregard for the law and the right of others around you. Funny thing is, that’s my definition of a “criminal” too.
  • Are you on commission / is your department hurting for money?
    • Believe it or not, in the county I work in my department only receives between $3 and $10 per ticket. When you factor in my time, potential court time, gas, and the cost to submit your ticket, we make less money than this blog…;)

I personally write tickets for one reason and one reason only: to correct behavior. I’m trying to change your thought process so you don’t hurt yourself or affect anyone else.

I’d also love to hear some other responses to tickets from you; I’ll combine them and answer them in a future post.
