Wills for Heroes Foundation

Everyone that knows me is aware that I love two things in particular: good deals and good deeds. Rarely do the two meet, but when they do I love to get the message out.

Having a will in place is a good idea, regardless of your financial status, number of dependents, or any other oft quoted factors. It’s a good idea because it insures that you and your family, not the state or an impartial court, decide the disposition of your assets and treasures. Most people work hard for their “things” and if for no other reason it’s worthwhile to make sure you have your say.

First responders (police, paramedics, fire) in particular should make sure they have a current will in place as statistically they face some of the higher odds of dying unexpectedly. However, between their inherent bravado and tight budgets it’s often overlooked. Thanks for the generosity of a non-profit fondation, at least one of those obstacles have been removed.

A organization called “Wills For Heroes Foundation” offers, in their words “support, services, financial assistance and supplies primarily to eligible emergency first responders and their families in the United States and secondarily to other public safety providers assisting with emergency public service events.”

In a nutshell, the foundation will organize an event with first responder organizations at no cost to the department or individual. Prior to the event, participants will complete the standard estate planning questionnaire to facilitate the creating of the will. During the event, volunteers are on site with computers, notaries, and assistants. They review the will with participants to make sure it addresses their needs, produce the necessary legally binding documents, and provide the results to the participants. All of this typically transpires in less than an hour.

The event originated in Arizona and they are tying to obtain nationwide coverage. They provide all the tools necessary to approach your state’s bar association and secure pro bono lawyers to assist in the event. These events are great PR activities, so I can’t imagine it would be difficult to solicit volunteers or partner organizations.

If you are a first responder or would like to help coordinate such an event, I encourage you to fill out the contact information. You will save each person between $100 - $2,500 dollars and help them insure that their wishes and needs will survive even if they don’t.

Their contact page can be found here.
