I’m not a good writer or comedian, I’m just a good first responder….

No, I don’t mean the typical first responder, I mean the type that responds first. But not to accident scenes or fires, just conversations about them. But not starting conversations about them, just responding. First. Grrr…, let me back up.

A lot of people have told me I’m funny. None of them have told me I’m hot, so I tend to believe they’re credible. I’m the funniest person they know, I have quick comebacks, I’m hilarious, etc. Most of the time it ends in the statement “You ought to be a stand up comedian” to which I immediately reply “that would never work.”

It’s not that I don’t think I’m funny. The problem is that all of my humor, is based on reacting to things and people around me. I don’t think of many insightful conversation starters, but if you start a conversation I can more than likely add humor or insight to it. That doesn’t translate well into stand up comedy because unless you’re doing improvisational you’re expected to saunter up to the mike and make people laugh.

The same is true with writing. I love debating complex subjects with people or responding to their writings. But to sit down and think of a creative start to an article or insightful spontaneous thought? I struggle with that. I’m like Chik-Fil-A, who’s motto is “We didn’t invent the chicken. Just the chicken sandwich.” I need someone to provide the chicken, I can dream up the sandwich.

I’m not sure if there is even such a term, but I think I’m best described as an “improver.” My day job consists of improving efficiency, cutting costs, reducing downtime, it’s all based on improving things already in place.

I guess all of the “creators” are in Sales, Marketing, and Product design, areas that I am not skilled in. That’s not a big deal, unless you want to see if you can start a blog and be moderately succesful with it.

So the question I’m asking myself is this: How do I take the simple fact that I’m a jack of many trades, master of none and combine it with my talents as an “improver” into content that people want to read? Should I find other articles and post them with my comments? Should I ask for content ala “Dear Abby” to produce material to respond to? Sure, I could tell endless cop stories, but even I get tired of those.

n a nutshell, I need to figure out how to make the blog version of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” if I have any hope or prayer of producing original content that readers will love.

If you have any ideas, leave a comment or email me. I’d love to craft you a witty, insightful reply…;)

Everything that is written is basically just the improvement of something that has been said before, or the synthesis of two things that were previously unconnected. Just write about things the way that you see them and you can’t go wrong

Find you voice and write with it. Co-opt things that you like, but melt into your own style rather than try to copy it. Your perspective will always be a bit different than others and let that shine through. It takes time to get into a rhythm, so don’t force it. But most of all, write about what you enjoy - that will come through and grab the reader’s attention.
